By Train:
To Rochester station, when you
reach the station exit, walk the 40 meters to the main road, which is
directly ahead. Turn right, walk to the pedestrian crossing, about 60
metres, and cross to the other side of the road. Continue in the same
direction, you will be approaching a set of traffic lights and
pedestrian crossing you will want to go straight ahead into Northgate
which becomes the high street further on. Having crossed the busy
junction, continue for about 200 metres till you reach Crow Lane on the
left. Walk up Crow Lane, after about 150 metres you will reach a
junction at which point you will want to go straight ahead (although to
do this, because of the railings and the road layout you will need to
cross to the right-hand side of Crow Lane, cross the vines, take care
not to go down Lockington Grove) and proceed up the Rochester Maidstone
Road. After walking for about 300 metres, you will come to Watts
Avenue. Walk up the hill; we are about 150 metres from the Rochester
Maidstone road on the left hand side.
By Car:
From London:
First Leg. (Distance to Greystones -
about 30 Miles) Take the A2. You will pass under the M25 at which point
you will have 12-14 miles to go.
Second Leg. (Distance to Greystones -
about 12-14 miles) After about 10 miles the A2 splits into the A2 and
the M2, stay on the A2 heading into Strood/Rochester. After about 2-3
miles you will be heading over Rochester Bridge (you will see the
Castle to the right as you go over the bridge).
Third Leg. (Distance to Greystones -
about 1.5 Miles). Once over the bridge you will immediately encounter a
set of traffic lights go straight ahead, after about 150 yards there is
another set of lights go straight ahead, followed swiftly by pedestrian
lights another two hundred yards another set of lights (big car park on
the right) go straight ahead– but ensure that you are in the
right-hand lane and after another two hundred yards you will approach
the next set of lights. You travel about 50 yards (the road bears round
to the right just before you reach the next set of lights) – you
will need to keep in the rightmost lane as you go through this set of
traffic lights, and turn right at the first opportunity (this is
Victoria Street about 20 yards beyond the lights – note that the
street name is very dark and not easy to see).
Fourth
leg. (Distance to Greystones – about ½ – ¾ miles)
Once you have made the turn into Victoria Street, you will travel about
100 yards and the main road will bear round to the right a further 100
yards and the road will bear round to the left. Once you have rounded
the second bend travel about 400 yards, you will find Watts Avenue is
on the right.
Fifth Leg. (Distance to Greystones
– about 150 yards) Go up the hill to the top, as the road levels
out begin to look for number 25 on the left-hand side.
From the M25
(Clockwise to the Dartford crossing).
First Leg. (Distance to Greystones
– about 15 miles) Once you have gone through the toll at the
Dartford crossing, keep to the left and take the exit for the A2
heading towards Canterbury/Dover.
Second Leg. Directions are now the
same as the Second Leg from London.
From the M25
(Anti Clockwise from the South and West).
First Leg. Once you have passed
junction 6 of the M25 you will soon (few miles) pass Clackett Lane
services. After a further few miles you will see signs indicating M25
(Dartford Crossing) and M26 (Folkestone /Dover), move across to the
rightmost lane take the M26. (If you manage to miss this junction do
not be alarmed it is easily done – continue until you reach the
A2 at junction 2 (about 10 miles) and head towards Canterbury/ Dover
and continue as if you where on the second leg from London).
Second Leg. (About 20 miles to
Greystones). The M26 eventually merges with the M20 at junction
3.
Third Leg. (About 12-13 miles to
Greystones). Continue on the M20 until you reach junction 6 and take
the A229 towards Rochester/Chatham. You will now be ascending Blue Bell
Hill. As you reach the top of the hill, take the exit on the left for:
Borstal (B2097), Buckmore Park M2 etc., you will reach a roundabout at
which you will need to go straight across - keep to the left
lane.
Fourth Leg. (Finding the B2097). You
will reach another roundabout; take the first exit which is for Borstal
the B2097. See alternate fifth leg if you miss the B2097 turnoff and
are still on the A229
Fifth Leg. (About 3-4 miles to
Greystones). Once on the B2097, after about 1 mile you will begin a
fairly long descent into Rochester, you will pass two sets of shops on
the left. Once you have passed the second set of shops, soon, on the
left hand side you will see a grassy area which is in fact the Watts
charity Almshouses. Watts Avenue is the next left –there is a
shop and an Indian Restaurant on the right. Once you have turned left
we are about 150 yards on the left-hand side.
Alternate Fifth Leg (If you missed the B2097
turnoff – easily done especially at night). If you are
still on the A229. After about ½ to ¾ of a mile you will come to a
round about, go straight ahead – you will see TOYS R US to the
left. After a further ½ mile the A230 branches off towards Chatham
– stay on the A229 towards Rochester (this is “City
Way”). After a further 2 miles (and a set of traffic lights) you
will see a large park on the right hand side. Once you see the park,
you will soon (600 yards) encounter a set of pedestrian lights followed
by a roundabout (this is a junction with the A2). There are two exits
from the roundabout take the left (first exit). You will now be
descending Star Hill. After a short distance (30 yards) the road
spreads into two lanes, keep to the left and at the traffic lights,
turn left into Victoria Street.
Sixth Leg (Not pertinent if you travelled
down the B2097). Directions are now the same as the Fourth Leg
from London.
From the East
(Dover/ Canterbury) on the M2:
First Leg. Travel until you reach
junction 3 of the M2, you will see traffic lights ahead, keep to the
left initially, going straight ahead, then to the right, I.E. Do NOT
take the A229 to Maidstone, Keep to the right you will want to look for
the B2097 - Borstal
Second Leg. (About 3-4 miles to
Greystones). The directions are now the same as if you had been
travelling from the M25 Anticlockwise from the South and West and you
would be on the Fourth leg – finding the B2097 with an
alternative if you find yourself on the A229 going towards Rochester.
From the East
(Folkestone) on the M20:
First Leg. Travel until you reach
junction 6 on the M20 and take the A229 heading towards
Rochester.
Second Leg. (About 6-7 Miles to

travelling from the M25 Anticlockwise from the South and West and you
would be on the Fifth leg.
